Behind Brie Leon with Janine Zafra

This Mother’s Day, we’re turning inward to spotlight the woman behind Brie Leon - founder and creative director, Janine Zafra.

"Motherhood has been one of the most demanding and meaningful journeys of my life. The physical and emotional transformation a woman undergoes after childbirth is immense, yet often overlooked. Each day is a cycle to prepare, change, cook, feed, clean, hold, teach, soothe—and somehow, it all fits into a single stretch of waking hours. I’m deeply grateful to have my own mother by my side, continuing this motion the time I’m at work, doing so much of what goes unseen. And still, there’s an unspoken expectation to carry on without complaint.

Mother’s Day is a meaningful time to honour the nurturing care, strength, and unconditional love that mothers provide. For me, it’s about reflecting on what we’ve learned from the women who’ve shaped us - whether that’s acknowledged through a heartfelt gift or a simple phone call."

As both a founder and a mother, Janine shares how the two roles have influenced one another in ways she didn’t expect. “I always thought that as a parent, I’d be the one doing most of the teaching—but as time goes on, I’ve realised how much I’ve learned from my children. Motherhood has given me a deeper understanding of compassion and patience, and taught me to embrace change and let go of things that don’t truly matter. That perspective has brought on a humble, more grounded approach to how I lead Brie Leon. It’s shaped not only the way I manage the business, but also how I like to encourage a positive, supportive and enjoyable team culture."

On Mother’s Day, we’re reminded of the women who continue to show up—with strength, softness, and everything in between. Our story is a quiet tribute to the kind of care that isn’t always acknowledged, but never taken for granted.

At the heart of it all is a belief in the power of women backing women - something Janine has carried with her from day one.

“I really believe there’s something special about women supporting women - it can have such a positive impact, not just in business but in everyday life too. In the fashion industry especially, where things can move quickly and feel overwhelming at times, having that kind of support makes a real difference. It doesn’t have to be big or loud - just sharing what you’ve learned, being encouraging, or simply showing up for someone can go a long way"

I’ve been lucky to experience that kind of support myself, and it’s definitely shaped how I try to show up for others too. When women back each other, it creates a sense of trust and community, and I think that’s what leads to more meaningful, lasting change.

Happy Mothers Day
